Data privacy is different for Gen Z

Gen Z’s complex relationship with data privacy differentiates the group from their older counterparts, argues this interesting piece.

What’s in store for the next generation when it comes to data privacy?

Well, it seems that it’s a little complicated. We already know that data privacy means different things to different people, but what does it mean for Gen Z?

Gen Z came of age during a major moment in data privacy. The global conversation around the topic shifted following the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018. The incident altered the public’s view of major technology companies from great innovators and drivers of the economy to entities that need more oversight.

And because of this, Gen Z seem to have a more despondent approach when it comes to holding brands to account.

When asked about these statements, Gen Z participants were much more likely for not to voice an opinion on what they expect from companies when it comes to data protection.

The article breaks down more data on Gen Z’s approach to data privacy, including some interesting findings on which types of companies they trust and what specific facets of data privacy would give them a positive impression of a company.

It seems that Gen Z is more sceptical by default and that for this group, data privacy will be more about maintenance than building it.

It’s well worth a read for those looking to craft a data privacy strategy for the future.

Meta’s surveillance biz model targeted in UK ‘right to object’ GDPR lawsuit

Meta has been hit with an interesting lawsuit in the UK.

The legal challenge — which is being brought by human rights campaigner Tanya O’Carroll — is seeking a declaration that Meta is in breach of the regional General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by continuing to process her data and use it to profile her for ad targeting purposes.
